Billy Carty Memorial Scholarship

The Billy Carty Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of the former Rutgers University at Camden shortstop and pitcher who died of cancer in 1985. Billy was co-captain of the Paul VI HS baseball team in 1981, and played at Rutgers-Camden during 1983 and 1984 while his cancer was in remission.

He was named the university’s Most Courageous Athlete in 1984. This scholarship was initiated, and has been sustained by individuals who took part in the first Phillies Dream Week in 1984. The scholarship fund has been supplemented since 1995 by donations in memory of Russ Trout. Russ was Billy’s uncle and his first coach in Little League baseball. Russ Trout also died of cancer in 1994.

Any donation made to the Hot Stovers is to the scholarship fund we have established.
An anonymous donor will match any funds donated, up to a total fund collection of $20,000.
